Preparing Students for Inter-Professional (Team) Healthcare

On Friday, February 23, 2018, 538 students from the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Social Work, and Pharmacy participated in another Year 1 Inter-professional Education (IPE) activity. These educational opportunities provide important interactions that allow students to learn about, from, and with other healthcare professionals so that they will be prepared to provide patient care as a contributing member of an inter-professional team.

The Year 1 IPE Activity introduces participants to challenges inherent in healthcare delivery and patient safety. Students from multiple health professions schools reviewed barriers to healthcare quality in ambulatory care. They prioritized shortcomings in healthcare delivery and discussed approaches to improve healthcare quality and patient safety, while developing an appreciation for the complexity of healthcare delivery and impediments to quality healthcare.
