Student Wellness & Support
  • The SOD Academic Support and Coaching Coordinator is available to discuss success plans, personal and academic struggles, general concerns, school policies, absences, life-balance, organization strategies, time-management, accommodations, and serve as a liaison to other support services available to students.  Contact Laura Beard, 816-235-2172, Room 3120B.
  • UMKC Counseling Services is a comprehensive mental health resource for all students providing individual counseling (in-person or tele-counseling), group counseling, relationship counseling, crisis intervention, psychological assessment, substance abuse prevention, outreach & consultation services, and referral services. The Initial consultation and first eight counseling sessions are FREE and then a minimal fee per session following.  Group counseling and workshops are FREE and UNLIMITED.  Emergency intake appointments are available every day at 10am and 2pm (please call first).

  • The American Student Dental Association provides resources and support for student wellness. Contact the UMKC SOD chapter and “Wellness Coordinator” for more details.  Stay connected through Instagram UMKC_ASDA or Facebook @UMKCASDA.

  • SOD Meditation / Reflection Space is available daily in room 365 to provide a quiet meditation and reflection space within the School of Dentistry. Questions regarding this space should be directed to the Office of Student Programs.  Please remember the following: occupancy is limited to one person at a time; use the room for its intended purpose; be respectful; no sleeping; any music must be at a low volume so as to not disrupt others; please put the sign available within the room on the outside door handle when in use. An additional space is located in the School of Medicine, room M3-205 (3rd floor). Learn about other similar spaces across campus here.
  • School of Dentistry Lactation Room is available in room 420B to provide a private space to nursing mothers.  Occupancy is limited to one person at a time, be respectful and use this space for its intended purpose.  Questions regarding this space should be directed to the Office of Student Programs.  Please follow the Women’s Center link at https://info.umkc.edu/womenc/services/lactation-spaces/ to find other locations within the UMKC Volker and Hospital Hill campus.
Problem Resolution
  • We understand academic and personal problems will arise during a student’s program. Contact these School of Dentistry staff and faculty as resources with academic problems, time management, leaves of absence, difficult relationships, leaves of absence, emergency financial concerns, conduct violations, discrimination, safety, and other matters that may arise.
