Gone (Competitive) Fish’n

Class of 2018 dental students, Coleton Caldwell (left) and Grant Oserowsky, spent their spring break representing the UMKC School of Dentistry Fishing Team at the Carhartt Bassmaster College Midwest Conference Regional at Osage Beach, Mo., in the Lake of the Ozarks, March 29-31, 2017. This year’s field of collegiate competitors was the biggest ever: 280 anglers comprising 140 two-person teams from colleges and universities throughout the Midwest. Coleton and Grant finished in the middle of the pack at 69th place (six fish totaling 16 pounds, five ounces). They wish they could have finished higher, but they are proud of the fact that they were the only team representing a professional school, instead of a college or university. Coleton has been hoping to return to this event ever since he participated in it as an undergraduate at Pittsburg State University in Kansas. However, his busy life as a dental student has stood in his way — until this year. He was so excited to learn that for the first time the tournament aligned with his spring break that he and Grant went before UMKC’s Student Government Association in January and gained recognition as a sanctioned student organization. As for the future of the UMKC School of Dentistry Fishing Team, Coleton says they’ll continue fish’n, recreationally and competitively as their schedules allow.
