Fall Explorer 2016: Class Notes

Classes of the 2000s
Terry (Storey) Gonzales (DH ’12) got married in 2012. She has a grandson born in August 2015 and a granddaughter in September 2016!

Katie (McCaa) Hiegert (DDS ’12) married Aaron Hiegert (DDS ’10) on June 8, 2012, right after graduating from dental school. They now have two sons: Aaron and Jacob. Katie is a pediatric dentist and Aaron is dental director of Denver Health.

John Poston (DDS ’12) and his wife, Jennifer, welcomed their first child, Grant Brown Poston, into the world on May 1, 2016.

Nicole Boxberger Christie (DDS ’07) was married June 25, 2016, in New Orleans, La., where she and her husband, Josh Christie, reside.

Neil Dean (DDS ’04) has a pediatric practice in McKinney, Texas, and his wife, Melissa Tricamo Dean (DDS ’02) works part time as a periodontist. They have two girls: Brooklyn (5) and Catherine (2).

Classes of the 1990s
Matthew Turner (DDS ’91) sold the horse farm and moved to the golf course. He traded the tractor for a golf cart and loves it! His son, Ethan, graduated in 2016 with an MBA in finance, and his daughter, Emily, will graduate in 2017 with a BA in studio art/art history. He and his wife, Shawn, have been married for two years!

Farrah Zaery’s (DDS ’91), son, Arshia, was 2½ years old when she started dental school, is now a dentist and has 2 ½ year old twin girls. Farrah and her eldest son practice dentistry together, and her youngest son is in his third year at UCLA School of Dentistry. Dr. Zaery is still married to her husband of 33 years.

Abbie McKight (DDS ’97) hired a new associate, Megan Konz (DDS ’16), on June 15, 2016. Megan joined the practice as Abbie’s partner after Lynne Schutte (DDS ’83) retired this fall.

Jennifer Pottinger (DDS ’97) welcomed Reagan Lynn Pottinger on May 2, 2012.

Ed Stephens (DDS ’97) just celebrated his fifth anniversary of being in his new office. He says his staff and patients still love it. He also just celebrated the second anniversary of working with Tom Mooney (DDS ’92) and having one of his satellite locations out of their office. Dr. Stephens says it sure is great working with an old friend.

Cathy Taylor-Osborne (DDS ’97) was inducted into the American College of Dentists this fall at the ADA meeting. Currently she serves as the director of the Bureau of Oral Health at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Classes of the 1980s
Norman Smith (DDS ’81) has successfully performed over 33,000 root canals and he still enjoys it!

John W. Tabash (DDS ’81) received his MS degree in oral biology and certificate in orthodontics from Loyola University School of Dentistry in Chicago in 1983. He retired from orthodontics after 31 years in private practice on December 30, 2014. He is enjoying retirement and is learning piano, chess, photography, and improving his golf game and traveling. He is also doing volunteer work with the poor through his parish. He has been married for 30 years to Mary S. Tabash, BS, RDH, who still practices hygiene on a limited basis. They have two children: John, a 25-year-old financial analyst in Florida, and Julie, a 27-year-old married opera singer and university instructor who performs throughout the country. Dr. Tabash says that he is “blessed with a happy, healthy life, family and retirement.”

Earl Larson (DDS ’82) will be serving as the GSLDS Trustee to the MDA starting in November 2016.

Jon Majers (DDS ’82) had his first grandchild, Conner, born this year.

Frank Schmidt (DDS ’82) is still in general practice in Branson, Mo.

John Hay (DDS ’87) and his wife, Megan, welcomed their first grandchild, Carter James Johnson, on Dec. 24, 2015.

Terry Myers (DDS ’87) has a son, Glen, who is a third-year dental student at UMKC and in the Air Force. His daughter, Katie, is studying international business at Loyola in Chicago.

Mark Scantlan (DDS ’87) has served as president of the Southwest Counties District of the Greater St. Louis Dental Society for over 15 years now and has been nominated for the 2017 VP of the GSLDS. He has also received an ADA Humanitarian award for overseas missions to India, Kenya, Senegal, Honduras, and Guatemala. With five kids and eight grandkids, he stays very busy!

Lendall Shell’s (DDS ’87) son, Ryan, is working on his PhD in paleontology, and his son, Alex, is finishing his senior year at the University of Arkansas and then will go on to law school.

Classes of the 1970s
Norman Waitley (DDS ’71) retired from medical practice (anesthesiology) in 2015. He and his wife are enjoying the achievements of their four kids who have provided them with 10 grandchildren, the youngest of whom is 12.

Tatiana Graham (DDS ’07) maintained a private practice for five years in Harrisburg, Pa. Her family then moved to Tampa, Fl for her husband’s job. She then took a year off and had her third child. In 2013 her family moved back to Missouri to her husband’s hometown of Joplin. Tatiana took a position at ACHE Dental, a charitable dental organization, as the dentist in their school program which served in schools throughout the SW MO area. She decided to take more time off when she had her fourth child. During that time she homeschooled her oldest son for two years. He is going to a private school this year and she is going back to work as a dentist part-time and continue her full-time job as a mom.

Larry McDonald (DDS ’72) retired in 2010. He has two sons and one grandson. He will have been married to his wife, Anne, for 50 years on June 17, 2017.

Donald Rennard (DDS ’72) plays lots of tennis these days and does a little traveling. His son, Jon, was married three years ago.

Dale Schutte (DDS ’72) retired from practice in September 2013.

Richard Gilman (DDS ’77, MS ‘80) retired in February 2016 and is now teaching part time in the UMKC Department of Periodontics.

John Waldron (DDS ’77) sold his practice in April 2013 and worked part time two days a week until July 2017, when he fully retired from being in private practice for 36 years.

Classes of the 1960s
Harlo Donelson (DDS ’62) still goes to the office three days a week. He loves what he does and is afraid of idle time. He wishes his best to his classmates.

James Dryden (DDS ’66) is still practicing endodontics part-time in Joplin, Mo. He taught at UMKC SOD from 2000–2011 and served as chair of the Department of Endodontics. He is still married with three sons and one grandson.

Richard McKinney (DDS ’64) retired from private practice after 52 years on June 30, 2016. He and his wife, Carol, will be traveling, playing golf and taking care of their two homes, one of which is in the mountains!

Newton Jones (DDS ’67) retired on Jan. 28, 2005.

John Kiesendahl (DDS ’67) received the Lab Instructor of the Year award from the Class of 2019 at the UMKC School of Dentistry.

Jerry Nossaman (DDS ’67) is retired, widowed, traveling and writing.

Paul Rebeck (DDS ’67) is still living and having great years with his delightful wife!

Russell Tabata (DDS ’67) is practicing a half day per week. He is enjoying trying to spend time with his eight grandchildren and looking forward to visiting with classmates in April 2017 at their 50th class reunion!

Robert Ward (DDS ’67) retired five years ago. He is currently splitting time between Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Highland Ranch, Colo. He is enjoying hunting, fishing, golfing, camping, hiking, and traveling to his grandkids’ football and track meets.

Joe Weaver (DDS ’62) is still playing tennis every day on his court in his back yard. He also travels to Europe every spring and every fall and is fluent in German and French!

Ralph Younger (DDS ’67) and his wife, Lynda L Younger, in 2016 provide $10,000 for a scholarship fund for the benefit of the UMKC School of Dentistry.

Classes of the 1950s
Ted S. Hine (DDS ’52) has quite the interesting family legacy. There are so many dentists in his family that he says family reunions are like dental meetings! His dad, Dr. Otto Hine, graduated from Western Dental College in 1915 (a predecessor of UMKC School of Dentistry). His crown and bridge instructor was Dr. Roy J. Rinehart, who was also Dean of the School when Dr. Ted Hine attended. His wife’s father, Dr. John Haddock, graduated from the newly merged Kansas City-Western College in 1924. Two of his wife’s sisters married UKMC School of Dentistry grads: R.G. Bowers (DDS ’53) and Robert Schick (DDS ’59). Dr. Hine’s son, Dr. Craig Hine, graduated from UMKC School of Dentistry in 1995. Dr. Bower’s son, Dr. Brandon Bowers, and Dr. Schick’s son, Dr. Rob Schick, both graduated from the Oklahoma School of Dentistry in 1976 and 1998, respectively. Dr. Brandon Bower’s daughters kept the family tradition alive: Blair Bowers graduated from the University of Oklahoma School of Dentistry in 2010 and her sister, Lauren, graduated from there in 2014. Dr. Hine, his dad and his son returned to their hometown, Muskogee, Okla., to practice. His son, Craig, is now in Tulsa. Dr. Haddock and the Bowers are in Shawnee, Okla., and the Schicks are in Duncan, Okla. What a great legacy to pass on to even more generations to come!

Marvin Hoffman (DDS ’57) and his wife, Skip, are still active physically and socially with community activities in Minot, N.D.

Charles (Bill) Neale (DDS ’57) retired from practice in 1996 and was elected County Coroner that same year. He has continued with that position and will retire again on December 31, 2016.
