A Woodworking Wonderland

Paul Kincaid (DDS ’45) has had many loves in his lifetime:  his wife, Mary Bess, who was also his high school sweetheart; his two sons; his five grandchildren; his profession; his patients and virtually anyone he meets. But since the passing of his beloved wife in January 2011, Dr. Kinkaid has rekindled another love — woodworking. He specializes in transforming exotic woods from around the world into stunning wooden bracelets. However, creating these objets d’art is only half the fun, the other half is the delight he takes in giving them away. He has given away hundreds of his creations to relatives, friends, patients and even random strangers whose day Dr. Kincaid thinks might need brightening with a random act of art and kindness.

After marrying Mary Bess in 1944 and graduating from the UKC School of Dentistry in 1945, Dr. Kincaid arrived in Lawrence, Kan., and set up his dental practice. Although he didn’t really plan to, he would come to love dentistry and serving his patients so much that he would continue practicing in Lawrence for the next 70 years. He officially retired on his 95th birthday in January 2015. One of the many reasons he loved working so much was the addition of his son, Charles (Charley) Kincaid (DDS ’76), who joined the practice in July 1976. Now, Dr. Kincaid may not be able to indulge his love for people through the art and science of dentistry, but he has definitely developed a satisfying alternative through the art of woodworking.
