Student Shadowing
Dentistry Shadowing
The dentistry shadowing experience allows prospective students the opportunity to sit chair-side while a third- or fourth-year dental student treats patients. Students may shadow in the general clinic or specialty clinics within the school when available.
Local students may sign up for one session per week up to three consecutive weeks, and then must take at least three weeks off. After three weeks, a student can then schedule another three-week rotation.
Students travelling from out-of-town may sign up for a maximum of five consecutive days during their stay in Kansas City.
Please arrive on time for your session:
- DDS morning session.: 9 a.m.-noon
- DDS afternoon session.: 1 p.m.-4 p.m.
Dental Hygiene Shadowing
The dental hygiene shadowing experience allows prospective students the opportunity to sit chair-side while a dental hygiene student treats patients.
Please schedule only one shadowing session per semester.
Please arrive on time for your session:
- Dental hygiene morning session: 9 a.m.-noon
- Dental hygiene afternoon session: 1 p.m.-4 p.m.
Dress code
Please dress business casual or in scrubs; no open-toed shoes or jeans. We require you wear socks, and long hair must be pulled back.
Please do not wear strong-smelling products such as perfume, cologne or lotion to prevent causing headaches or allergic reactions in our patients.
Parking
Visitors should acquire a visitor’s parking permit from the front desk on the first floor. Visitors should park in surface lot 68 on 25th Street between Campbell and Charlotte.
UMKC students with student parking permits should park in parking structure at 24th and Charlotte.
It is the visitor’s responsibility to pay the meter if they choose to park in a meter spot.

Sign in at the Office of Student Programs in room 420 (the first office to the right after you exit the elevator).
