UMKC Dental Research Students Present at 2019 IADR/AADR Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia

Six DDS students from the UMKC School of Dentistry participated in this year’s 2019 International and American Association for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) Conference held in Vancouver, BC, Canada from June 19-22. These students were part of the 2018-19 UMKC SOD Summer Scholars Program, a nine-week research program. Each student had to submit an abstract of their research project in order to be invited to present at the 2019 conference.

Summer Scholar poster presenters included Nathan Haverkamp, Kika Masunaga, Bryson Nakatani, Brianne Schmiegelow, Zachary Vogel, and Megan Yamaguchi. Additionally, Zachary Vogel represented UMKC in the Student Competition for Advancing Dental Research and its Application (SCADA) held on June 18th.

All of the students demonstrated confidence and professionalism not only in their presentations but in their handling of challenging questions from top scientists in the field of dental research. The success of all our DDS students at IADR/AADR conference is due in part to the efforts of the Summer Scholars Program Director, Dr. Mary P. Walker, and the participation of the research mentors, who provide invaluable guidance for the students. Mentors included: Dr. Brenda Bohaty, Dr. Lynn Friesen, Dr. Nuria Lara-Castillo, Dr. Mark Johnson, Dr. Cynthia Petrie, Dr. Erin Bumann, Dr. Yong Wang, Dr. Rose Wang, and Dr. Donna Deines.

The annual IADR/AADR conferences are a highpoint in the Summer Scholars Program, providing a forum for excellence in original oral health and dental research.
