SNDA/HSDA Host Prospective Dental Applicants at Dental Research Explorer Program

The Student National Dental Association/Hispanic Dental Association hosted prospective dental applicants this March as part of the Dental Research Explorer Program. The program allows attendees to mirror the first-year dental school experience and learn from fellow students, faculty and is staff. The Dental Research Explorer Program meets throughout the school year and focuses on local underrepresented and underserved middle schools, high schools and colleges in the area. A typical meeting features a presentation by a dental faculty member or a graduate student, followed by a hands-on experience in the school’s pre-clinical laboratory. Participants make dental impressions, take dental x-rays, drill and place sealants on plastic teeth, make 3D scans and mil and dental restorations or crowns.

At this meeting, Professor Tamra Hoffman, RDH and retired dental assistant Mrs. Lynn Prine, met with the Dental Research Explorer Post. Professor Hoffman began the session with an overview of radiology. She explained the importance of dental x-rays and how they are used to help diagnose a problem. She proceeded to share several types of x-rays including Bitewing x-rays, periapical x-rays and Occlusal x-rays, explained the difference between digital versus plain film x-rays and emphasized the importance of keeping radiation to a minimum using several safety measures including aprons. The session continued with instructions on the placement of radiographs and tips on how to get the best x-ray results.

The students were escorted to the radiology dept.to get firsthand experience performing  x-rays on a manikin called a dexter. Each student performed several rounds of x-rays to the degree that they achieved a comfort level and competency in performing the exercise.

John Cottrell, Director of Minority and Special Programs, is the Coordinator for the Dental Research Explorer Post. Members of the Student National Dental Association/Hispanic Dental Association, faculty and other interested dental students assist to offer one-on-one mentoring and ensure proper protocols are observed.
