MDC 2017 Was The Place To Be
Over 3,700 alumni, friends, students and exhibitors CONNECTED at the 2017 Midwest Dental Conference, held April 6–9. The busy weekend was full of scientific sessions, class reunions, exhibit hall shopping, donor recognition, and fun times for all.
With this year’s conference theme, CONNECT, came the opportunity to “connect” in new ways. The Conference has always and will always be a great way to reconnect with classmates and colleagues, connect learning with fun, and connect business with innovations in the Exhibit Hall. But this year we also offered ways to connect by offering space on the reunion boards to share memories and favorite stories from school, and we created special photo spots to capture connections made at the Conference.

Pouring from the Heart
Thursday at MDC 2017 connected patients in need with financial support they desperately require at the Pouring from the Heart benefit gala. The ballroom overflowed with attendees who were treated to five courses of exquisite eats, professionally paired with sensational wines; once in a lifetime live auction packages, like a golf trip to Ireland; and some fun and games to win a wine fridge and in-home wine tasting. Together with Goetze Dental and event sponsors, the UMKC School of Dentistry’s Rinehart Foundation raised nearly $56,000 to help indigent patients that come through the UMKC clinic doors and cannot afford the critical dental treatments they need. Guests at Pouring from the Heart were impacted by a story of how this amazing care changed a patient’s life and greatly influenced her ability to enjoy everyday activities we take for granted, like eating solid foods and smiling at grandchildren. As a result, one of our amazing students gained a patient for life and a passion for helping others.
During the night’s festivities, the third annual John Haynes Leadership through Service Award was presented to Dr. John Killip for his selfless giving and dedication to the School, students, and education. The award is given to someone who possesses the qualities the late Dr. Haynes exemplified, and Dr. Killip is a shining example of this.
Thank you to all who supported such a wonderful cause, and we look forward to another great event next year.
Welcome Party & Reunions
Another highlight of the conference is the Friday night Welcome Party where attendees reconnect with classmates and colleagues. As always, attendees enjoyed good food and good fun. KC Wolf, the Kansas City Chief’s mascot, entertained the crowd along with the green screen photo booth (featuring pictures from the School’s past) and fun, inflatable dental tools. Following the Welcome Party many of the attendees participated in their class reunions. Classes celebrating big milestones were the Class of 1967 celebrating 50 years in the profession and all class years ending in “2” or “7.”
It was such a treat to see such a large turnout of the Class of 1967 at the Rinehart Foundation Recognition Breakfast on Saturday morning. With a whopping 33 members and their guests in attendance, it was a room full of great stories and memories! Also honored at the breakfast were Reese Graue (DDS ’08), 20 1 7 Young Alum of the Year, as well as alumni who have made significant gifts to the Foundation and achieved lifetime giving milestones of $10,000+, $25,000+, $50,000+, and $100,000+.
It was a pleasure to have them all in one room and recognize them for their efforts. Alumni with such a strong connection to the School are why the Foundation is able to support so many projects that are important and vital to the students, faculty, and school.
Exhibit Hall Connections
Attendees were able to connect with industry experts in the Exhibit Hall. Over 100 companies filled the aisles with everything from equipment, to financing options, to supplies, to marketing solutions. Over 75 product categories were represented. Attendees packed the hall to learn the latest and greatest in products available. Back this year was a Friday afternoon popcorn break for attendees to enjoy a snack while perusing the booths, and on Saturday morning attendees enjoyed hot coffee and hot deals at a complimentary coffee bar. Attendees also enjoyed over 80 table clinics presented by students. Thank you to the participating exhibitors!
As always, the Midwest Dental Conference was a great time to reconnect and refresh. Don’t miss next year’s Conference, April 5-8, 2018!
