Dr. Steven Haas is the dean of the School of Dentistry. Prior to joining UMKC, he was the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Interim Chair of the Department of Adult Restorative Dentistry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry.

Dr. Haas earned his D.M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, did his hospital residency at The Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia and postgraduate prosthodontic specialty training at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dentistry. After working in private practice, he returned to school to earn his J.D. from Touro College Law Center in Huntington, New York, and his M.B.A. from the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida. He has served on numerous dental society committees related to legislation, malpractice and discipline issues, reviewed cases for the Office of Professional Discipline in New York and gave remediation courses for the Florida Board of Dentistry. He holds dental licenses in multiple states and law licenses in both New York (retired) and Florida.

He is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, since 1983, and has taught at multiple dental schools and hospitals during his career, including serving as the Director of the General Practice Residency at University Hospital Stony Brook. Dr. Haas has received numerous teaching awards, recognized as the Attending of the Year, three times, at Long Island Jewish Hospital, received the American Jurisprudence Award for Achievement in Legal Methods, the Award for Exemplary Contribution to the Quality of Student Life at Touro Law Center and Overall Professor of the Year award at Nova Southeastern University School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Haas’ interests lie in the improvement in the delivery of dental care to the public through improved service operations, quality control and improvement, teaching of ethical principles and the fundamentals of cultural and linguistic competency, and dedication to evidenced based decision making. He loves traveling to Brazil, physical fitness, which includes running, martial arts (Tae Kwon Do and Jui Jitsu) and weight training. Along with his wife, Luana, he has four children, Justin, Brandon, Leandro and Nathalia.
