Julie Sutton joined the UMKC School of Dentistry Dental Hygiene faculty full-time in September of 2013. She earned her BSDH and MS in Dental Hygiene Education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 2007 and 2011, respectfully. During schooling she focused on public health, periodontics and clinical instruction- which are still her favorite topics. In addition to the Team Based Community Oral health course, she teaches Biochemistry/Nutrition, Community Dentistry Practicum, and senior clinic, as well as guest speaking on Tobacco and ultrasonic instrumentation. She serves actively in the American Dental Hygienist’s Association, is on the Journal of Dental Hygiene Review board, and has a passion for student mentorship. Her research interests include the impact of second hand smoke on non-smokers’ oral health, non-traditional tobacco sources and the benefits of cessation, service learning/civic engagement, and evidence based practice.
