Associate Professor Julie D. Sutton, MS, BSDH, RDH has been teaching continuously at the University of Missouri- Kansas City (UMKC) School of Dentistry since 2013 in the Division of Dental Hygiene. Julie assumes community dentistry aspects of the dental hygiene curriculum through Principles of Public Health, Team Based Community Oral Health Field Experiences and Community Practicum course directorship where she enjoys the privilege of challenging, contextualizing and celebrating the content through student mentorship and community engaged learning. Her other courses equip students to offer alternative approaches to clinical care and to evaluate the role of the oral environment in their approach to prevention and management. Her research interests include community engaged learning, and environmental factors affecting health outcomes. She has won research awards from the American Academy of Periodontology and has disseminated her research nationally and internationally at professional meetings, she is published in peer-reviewed journals, she is herself a peer reviewer and serves her professional association at the state level.
