Course Objectives:

  • Infection Control/Exposure Control protocols to minimize transmission of infections in the clinical process
  • Protection of patients and oral healthcare personnel via:
    • Direct contact with blood, saliva, and other secretions
    • Indirect contact with contaminated instruments, operatory equipment, or environmental surfaces
    • Airborne contaminants — droplet spatter and aerosols of infectious body fluids
  • Personal Protective Equipment/Standard Precautions
  • Environmental Infection Control: post exposure evaluation and follow-up
  • Medical records: medical conditions and work restrictions

Maryjane Bruning, RDH, MS is a 1982 LSU School of Dentistry graduate with a BS degree in Dental Hygiene. She currently supervises and maintains the Central Sterilization Department at the UMKC School of Dentistry. Bruning also serves as the chairperson on the Committee for Infection Control and is an active member of OSAP (Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention).
