Course Overview:
This course will provide dentists with an update in sedation dentistry, hygienists with the necessary training and experience to provide nitrous oxide and dental assistants with experience and training to monitor in the dental office. This course is extended in length to satisfy both the Kansas and Missouri Dental Boards training requirements.

Course Objectives:

  • Considerations, indications and contra-indications for nitrous oxide
  • How to obtain, record and monitor vital signs (pulse, respiration and blood pressure)
  • Appropriate steps in the effective administration of nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia

PLEASE NOTE: Participants must attend both days and either act as a peer patient or secure a patient able to receive nitrous oxide in order to complete and receive credit for the course

Registrants must submit the following documentation prior to the course:

  • Medical History
  • Liability Waiver
  • Consent form to participate as a peer patient or secure a patient able to receive nitrous oxide
  • Provide a physician’s written approval to participate in the course if pregnant

Dr. Keerthana Satheesh completed her DDS degree (2005) and obtained her periodontics certificate (2003) at the UMKC School of Dentistry. She earned an MS degree in dentistry from the University of Minnesota (2006). She has served as a full-time faculty member in the UMKC Department of Periodontics since 2003. At UMKC she has served as director of Advanced Periodontics (2014-2016) and is now the chair of the Department of Periodontics. She also works in private practice in Overland Park, Kan. She has didactic and clinical responsibilities in both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral courses. She is board certified by the American Board of Periodontology and holds a Missouri license in moderate parenteral sedation. Dr. Satheesh has received the AAP Educator award and an ITL fellowship in teaching and learning, and she recently graduated from the ADEA Leadership Institute. She is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Distinguished Teacher award, the David Moore Teaching award, and the Elmer F Pierson Excellence in Teaching Award. She is an active member of several professional organizations and was inducted into the American College of Dentists in 2015.

Eileen Cocjin, DDS, is a Clinical Associate Professor at UMKC School of Dentistry since 2002 in the Pediatric Dentistry Department. She serves as clinical faculty for the undergraduate dental students as they learn to manage and treat children from birth to at least twelve years of age. She received her dental degree first from the University of the East College of Dentistry in Manila, Philippines in 1986 and then from the UMKC School of Dentistry in 2005. She completed her certificate in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Southern California in 1998 and is board certified in Pediatric Dentistry since 2006. She serves as faculty advisor for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Student Club at UMKC. She is a recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award at UMKC in 2003 and again in 2018. She also works one day a week in a private practice in Leavenworth, KS.
