Charles L. Dunlap (D.D.S. '60) was from Stigler, a small town in Oklahoma. He often mentioned how shocked and proud he was to be admitted to the UMKC School of Dentistry. He went on to pursue a certificate in Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology in 1967 and was awarded Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Pathology in 1970.

Later in his career, he served as President of the American Board of Oral Pathology in 1980 and in 1980-81, as President of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Dunlap (Charlie, to his colleagues and friends) returned to UMKC and became a beloved faculty member for more than 40 years.

With a regional and national reputation as a clinical pathologist, Dunlap formed a close partnership and friendship with longtime colleague, Dr. Bruce Barker. Together, they built the school's Oral Pathology Biopsy service into one of national prominence, serving as the referral center of choice for many alumni and physicians.

With a command of oral pathology second to none, Dunlap loved diagnosing and discussing a case with a student or colleague and his door was always open. He generously donated to many community causes, scholarship funds and, in retirement, fully funded restorative care for patients with no other means to pay through the Charles Dunlap Indigent Care Fund, overseen by his daughter, Shara Dunlap (D.D.S. '94), and UMKC faculty.

Always believing in the educational process and future of the profession, Dunlap also generously provided key funding for the construction of the Dr. Charles Dunlap Center for Research and Education in Technology (the school's "Innovation Clinic"), which was formally dedicated in September 2013.

Dunlap, 87, died in his home in Lee's Summit, Missouri on Saturday, April 9, 2022.
