UMKC School of Dentistry hosted a free dental clinic for elementary students to ‘Give Kids a Smile’ providing critical access to local children in need.  More than 100 UMKC dental students , 30 dental hygiene students, numerous faculty and staff volunteers as well as more than a dozen local dentists, dental hygienists and staff provided critical care as part of the free Give Kids A Smile dental clinic at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry. Services were provided to more than 70 children who do not have access to the benefits of dental care. In some cases, these children have never received a professional cleaning, and suffer from cavities, decay and infection.  Each of the elementary-school-aged children received an exam, professional cleaning and fluoride treatment, as well as sealants, restorative care and oral surgery if needed and as time permited. While critical care is being provided, the event is also designed to be fun. After treatment, the kids were treated to face painting, temporary tattoos, a movie, a visit from the Tooth Fairy and more, courtesy of the PEDO Club at UMKC School of Dentistry. They each left with a toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss donated by Procter & Gamble and Delta Dental of Missouri and a book donated by the Kansas City Public Library. Delta Dental is also provided transportation and lunch for each child.

The UMKC School of Dentistry has been hosting a free, comprehensive Give Kids A Smile dental clinics each February for the past nine years in conjunction with National Give Kids A Smile Day. On Feb. 7, there were more than 1,700 events of varying sizes taking place nationwide, providing care to about 400,000 children in need. The Kansas City event is made possible thanks to the UMKC School of Dentistry, Delta Dental of Missouri, Score 1 for Health, Henry Schein Dental Supply, Procter & Gamble and local dental professional volunteers.
