UMKC Dental Research Students Present at 2014 AADR Conference
Ten DDS students from the UMKC School of Dentistry participated in this year’s 2014 American Association for Dental Research (AADR) Conference held in Charlotte, NC from March 19th-22nd. These students were part of the 2013 UMKC SOD Summer Scholars Program, a nine week research program. Each student had to submit an abstract of their research project in order to be invited to present at the 2014 AADR conference.
Oral presenters included Audrey Sill and Travis Tegerdine. Brad Chun, Richie Gallant, Caren Abraham, Corey Hastings, Lauren Todoki, Emily Frenz, Kevin Kaiser, and Brett Zobell gave poster presentations. All of the students demonstrated poise and professionalism not only in their presentations but in their handling of challenging questions from top scientists in the field of dental research.
In addition to presenting posters, Brad Chun and Richie Gallant participated in the Hatton Research Awards Competition. 130 people applied to enter the competition. Of those entrants, 27 researchers were invited to participate in the final competition at the AADR conference. Nine of the 27 participants were DDS students (including Chun and Gallant). This is the first time the UMKC School of Dentistry has had any students selected to participate in this prestigious competition.
The success of all our DDS students at AADR is due in part to the efforts of the Summer Scholars Program Director, Dr. Mary P. Walker, and the participation of the research mentors, who provide invaluable guidance for the students. Mentors included: Dr. Lianxian Bi, Dr. Brenda Bohaty, Dr. Lynda Bonewald, Dr. Sarah Dallas, Dr. Donna Dienes, Dr. Lynn Friesen, Dr. Jeff Gorski, Dr. Mark Johnson, Dr. Nuria Lara, Dr. Delphine Maurel, Dr. Yasu Ueki, Dr. Mary Walker, Dr. Yong Wang, and Dr. Xiaomei Yao.
The AADR/IADR annual conferences are a highpoint in the Summer Scholars Program, providing a forum for excellence in original oral health and dental research.
