Dr. Spencer is a Deane E. Ackers distinguished professor in the School of Engineering and the founding Director of the Bioengineering Research Center at the University of Kansas. Dr. Spencer is a Curators’ Professor Emeritus, Departments of Oral Biology and Pediatric Dentistry. She performs research in the area of biomaterials with a particular focus on understanding the fundamental phenomena controlling biological interactions at material interfaces and the development of non-destructive techniques for analyzing solid-liquid interfacial interactions in biological systems. A fundamental aspect of the integrated research program that is the hallmark of Dr. Spencer’s work is that it serves as a catalyst for collaborative investigations focused on the design and synthesis of new biomaterials both synthetic and tissue-engineered and the development of clinical imaging devices and technologies. Dr. Spencer is a fellow in the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), American College of Dentists, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy of Dental Materials and a member of numerous societies including the Society of Biomaterials, Sigma Xi, Society for Applied Spectroscopy.
