Dr. Spencer is a Deane E. Ackers distinguished professor in the School of Engineering and the founding Director of the Bioengineering Research Center at the University of Kansas. Dr. Spencer is a Curators’ Professor Emeritus, Departments of Oral Biology and Pediatric Dentistry. She performs research in the area of biomaterials with a particular focus on understanding the fundamental phenomena controlling biological interactions at material interfaces and the development of non-destructive techniques for analyzing solid-liquid interfacial interactions in biological systems. A fundamental aspect of the integrated research program that is the hallmark of Dr. Spencer’s work is that it serves as a catalyst for collaborative investigations focused on the design and synthesis of new biomaterials both synthetic and tissue-engineered and the development of clinical imaging devices and technologies. Dr. Spencer is a fellow in the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, American College of Dentists, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy of Dental Materials and a member of numerous societies including the Society of Biomaterials, Sigma Xi, Society for Applied Spectroscopy.
