Dr. Maria del Cielo Barragan-Adjemian is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Special Patient Care Clinic with a joint appointment in the Department of Oral Biology. Dr. Barragan-Adjemian received her D.D.S. from the Intercontinental University, Mexico City in 1995. She pursued a career in research completing her Ph.D. in Oral Biology and Cell Biology and Biophysics from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2006. Research interests include the molecular mechanisms of bone remodeling as well as the interaction with teeth. At present she provides dental care to patients with serious medical conditions and she is starting to bridge between basic and clinical sciences. Her research involves translational research focusing in understanding the relationship between the use of intravenous bisphosphontes in patients with metastatic cancer and the appearance of necrotic lesions in the jaw bones, as well as the characterization of risk factors and potential treatment for patients with the condition.
