Research:

1. Bone stabilizer: bone cement is used to stabilize fractures and prosthetic devices such as those used for hip and knee replacement. The currently used bone cement is polymethacrylate (PMMA) which has several drawbacks such as severe toxicity and heat generation and shrinkage. We have developed silorane-based resins superior to PMMA in many characteristics such as less toxicity, less heat generation and low shrinkage. We are interested in understanding the biomechanical property and bone formation after stabilization of fractured bone.

2. Bone defect repair: Bone defect repair is a major challenge for reconstructive surgery. Bone regeneration is needed to repair large defects and fractures. In order to improve the biomechanical property and bone formation, we have developed three-dimensional scaffolds composed of bioactive glass fibers, micro-spheres, and particles whose unique structure and properties are optimized for the repair and regeneration of critical size bony defects. These scaffolds provide surface features such as high surface area nanostructures hydroxyapatite that promote cell attachment and proliferation, contain nano- and micro-sized pores conducive to cell grow and function, and release the trace elements and growth factor. The goal of the study is to determine the amount and rate of bone formation in vitro and in vivo.

3. Fracture healing: Previously studies have shown that negatively charged beads, negatively charged polypeptide osteoformin and other growth factors enhance bone formation and accelerate fracture healing. The more work regarding acceleration of fracture healing will be performed using growth factors or combination growth factors with bone stabilizer, nano-bioactive glass fibers etc.
