Alumni Award Recipients
Brian Vierthaler (DDS ’02)
Young Alum of the Year after graduating from the UMKC School of Dentistry, Dr. Brian Vierthaler worked as an associate in Platte City, Mo., and North Kansas City, Mo. One year later, he bought a practice located in Grant City, Mo., while working as an associate for Bruce E. Twaddle (DDS ΄83) in Maryville, Mo. A year and a half later, in 2005, he opened his own practice in Maryville. Presently, Dr. Vierthaler owns and operates two practices — in Grant City and Maryville — that focus on comprehensive general dentistry. “What I enjoy about dentistry is connecting with people, both patients and professionally,” says Dr. Vierthaler. “I have had the benefit of having a good friend and mentor, Bruce E. Twaddle, help me professionally as well as personally during my career. Working with the MDA and serving as a board member have been a great pleasure.”
Dr. Vierthaler has been an ADA and MDA member since 2002. He has been serving as Northwest trustee on the MDA board since 2008, and currently serves on the MDA committee for public education campaign. He is a graduate of the MDA’s Leadership Development Continuum and the 2008 recipient of the MDA’s Outstanding New Dental Leader Award. A member of the NW Dental Society since 2004, he served as vice president in 2006-07 and president in 2007-08.
John Nelson Jr. (DDS ’82), president of the UMKC Dental Alumni Association, presented Dr. Vierthaler with the award at the Alumni and Friends Recognition Breakfast, held Saturday, March 20, during the 2010 Midwest Dental Conference. The breakfast is hosted by the Rinehart Foundation, the UMKC Dental and Dental Hygienists’ Alumni Associations and the School of Dentistry.
