Master of Science in Dental Hygiene Education

  • The University of Missouri-Kansas City Graduate Dental Hygiene Program awards a Master of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene Education.

  • The program begins each August and continues for two academic years. Enrollment is limited in order to provide graduate students adequate faculty support for developing and implementing their research projects and completing their thesis.

Program Duration and Overview
The Master of Science Degree program in Dental Hygiene Education at the University of Kansas Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) prepares students for careers in dental hygiene education (teacher preparation, clinical and classroom), research, gerontology, special patient care, health services administration, and community dental health, through a personalized approach – pursuing excellence together.

The curriculum provides meaningful academic experiences for each graduate student, based on his/her career goals and interest. Courses may be chosen from a wide variety offered in the School of Dentistry, School if Business and Public Administration, School of Education, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Nursing or any other academic unit at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. The 36 credit hour graduate program may be completed on a full or part- time basis, and requires a minimum of 1 ½ - 2 academic years for full-time students. There is a thesis option and a non-thesis option. *The 36 hours include the UMKC Division of Dental Hygiene Core Curriculum (required courses).

Admission
Admission requirements include:

• Graduation from an accredited school or program of dental hygiene
• Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
• Satisfactory academic record

The required applications materials must include:

• Application for admission to the University of Missouri-Kansas City with a $35.00 non-refundable application fee
• Supplemental application to the Division of Dental Hygiene
• Typed Narrative Statement (see supplemental application)
• Official transcripts of all previous academic work
• Three completed recommendation forms (one of three must be from the director of the dental hygiene program attended)
• Completed area of interest sheet (depicting area of interest, teaching, administration, research)

Upon receipt of the required application materials, the applicant will be contacted for a personal interview with the Graduate Dental Hygiene Admissions Committee.

The deadline for application is February 1, for classes beginning in the Fall semester of each year. Basic knowledge and experience in conducting research is gained through related course work in the program and the completion of a research project for both the thesis and non-thesis option. Teaching experiences may be gained through clinical and classroom teaching responsibilities with dental hygiene and /or dental students. The opportunity for a teaching externship at another dental hygiene institution is available to graduate students who meet the established criteria

Completed applications and all other supplementary materials must be submitted to the Director of Graduate Dental Hygiene Education by February 1 for the class beginning the following fall semester.

Assistantships and Tuition-Waiver Awards
Graduate research assistantships and non-resident tuition-waiver awards are available to students on a competitive basis. The American Dental Hygienists’ Association as well as other organizations award scholarships to dental hygienists at the master's degree level on a competitive basis.

Curriculum
The core curriculum listed below is required. Many of the courses are offered only online. UMKC has designed computer - mediated distance learning through two learning methods, Asynchronous and Synchronous learning.

Asynchronous learning means that learning can take place at any location and at any time. It virtually means access to learning is available 24/7.
The second learning method, Synchronous learning, is delivered in real time through such technology as weekly Internet – based formats using chat rooms. Refer to last page of this pamphlet for computer requirements for online courses.

The total number of credit hours required for completion of the Master of Science Degree Program in Dental Hygiene Education is 36 credit hours for either the thesis or the non-thesis option.

There are several areas of concentration in the Master of Science Degree Program: teacher preparation (clinical and classroom), gerontology, special patient care, and health services administration. Elective coursework may be taken across concentration areas at the School of Dentistry, School of Education, School of Business and Public Administration, College of Arts and Sciences, or any other academic unit at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Consult with the program director for information on coursework offered at the Dental School, which is available for graduate dental hygiene study.

Requirements for Graduation:
1. A minimum of a 3.0 GPA
2. Successful completion of 36 credit hours with a thesis or non-thesis option.
3. All other requirements for graduation as stated in the General Academic Regulations and Information section of the UMKC General Catalog.
4. Prepare and present a table clinic at the Midwest Dental Conference during the Winter semester.

Distance Education Option
The Distance Education Master of Science Degree Program in Dental Hygiene Education is a 36 hour program that may be completed on a full or part-time basis. A minimum of two academic years is required for full-time students. Six of the 36 hours must be transferred in from another institution. The six transfer credits must include a three credit hour course in Research Methodology and Statistics approved by the Program Director. In addition, a professional scientific table clinic presentation at the Midwest Dental Conference is required for graduation. Due to the uniqueness of this program, prospective applicants will need to contact the Program Director for advising.

Students’ Right-to-Know Statement

However, the UMKC  School of Dentistry reports 96% of its first-time dental students return the second year.
