On Friday June 3, 2011, the UMKC School of Density (SOD) held its second annual Transitioning into the Profession Ceremony to acknowledge the transition of the incoming junior DDS class and senior dental hygiene class into the “patient care” stage of their education. A crowd of about 500 family members and friends gathered in Pierson Auditorium on the UMKC Volker campus to witness the ceremony.

Following welcoming remarks by Dean Marsha Pyle, Dr. Jack Nelson (DDS ’82), a past president of the UMKC School of Dentistry Dental Alumni Association and Dr. Marsha Volker, assistant professor of Dental Hygiene, took turns at the podium to recognize the students’ academic accomplishments and charge them with maintaining the highest ethical standards throughout their personal and professional lives. Then students from each class read the Codes of Ethics that their respective class had drafted. Class members ascended the stage to sign the Codes of Ethics documents. As the dental hygiene students exited the stage, they were presented with a new set of scrubs embroidered with their name, the UMKC School of Dentistry and Departmental logo. As the dental students exited, UMKC faculty helped each of them don their white doctor coat. Afterward the participants and audience members gathered at the School of Dentistry for a congratulatory reception.

The Codes of Ethics of each class will be framed and displayed at the entrance to the Dr. Robert and Mrs. Lucille Cowan Center for Clinical Care, the school’s patient care area, as a daily reminder to the students of the importance of maintaining ethical standards as they deliver oral health care to their patients.

The members of the Dental Hygiene Class of 2012 and the DDS Class of 2013 extend their gratitude to the Rinehart Foundation, the Dental Alumni Association, the UMKC Dental Hygienists’ Alumni Association and Colgate Palmolive for their generous support in providing the scrub sets and white coats as well the reception.
