On Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, the UMKC School of Dentistry held its eighth Give Kids a Smile dental clinic, in conjunction with National Give Kids a Smile Day sponsored by the American Dental Association. UMKC third-year dental students and junior dental hygiene students, along with volunteer dentists from the Kansas City metro, provided free, comprehensive oral health care to approximately 150 elementary school children from Jackson County, Wyandotte County (Bonner Springs, Kan.) and Johnson County (Olathe, Kan.) All of the patients had been pre-screened so UMKC students and volunteers were able to immediately begin performing oral exams, professional cleanings and fluoride treatments, as well as sealants, restorative care and oral surgery if needed. After treatment, the kids were treated to face painting, temporary tattoos, a Disney movie, a visit from the Tooth Fairy and more, courtesy of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Student Chapter. They also received a toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss donated by Delta Dental of Missouri and a book donated by the Kansas City Public Library. Delta Dental also provided a brown bag lunch for each child as well as transportation to and from the event. Score 1 for Health, Henry Schein Dental Supply and Proctor & Gamble also provided support for the event.
