Dr. Russell Tabata Honored

Chancellor Leo Morton, Dean Marsha Pyle, Vice Chancellor Curt Curspino and Hilary Wheat travelled to Honolulu this year to host an important alumni reception and tribute event.  All of the UMKC alumni in Hawaii were invited to join together in celebrating their alma matter and honoring Dr. Russell Tabata, the 2013 recipient of the Bill French award given by the university in honor of great service to the institution. More pictures

UMKC/MDA EFDA Partnership
The UMKC School of Dentistry and Missouri Dental Association (MDA) have been awarded a three-year $250,000 grant by the Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH) to increase and improve training opportunities for expanded functions dental assistants (EFDAs). This goal of the program is to produce 500 new EFDAs over the next three years. The grant funds will be used for three purposes:
• To place the didactic portions of the training curriculum on the Internet for easy access
• To expand the number and geographic dispersion of clinical training sites
• To provide tuition subsidies for students from the most underserved communities Research indicates, on average, that EFDAs improve the productivity of a dental practice by 10 to 15%. Collectively, at the end of the grant period, the 500 new EFDAs trained through this grant will add the productivity of 50-75 full-time equivalent (FTE) dentists to the oral health workforce of MFH’s 84-county service area. This will enable the oral health work force of those counties (at an average productivity of 2,600 dental visits per dentist) to provide an additional 130,000 to 195,000 dental visits annually. This means (at an average of 2.5 dental visits per patient) that 52,000 to 78,000 patients, who currently cannot get timely access to needed dental care will be able to get it.
This is not the first time UMKC and MDA have teamed up for EFDA training. In 1995, when Missouri’s dental practice act was amended to authorize EFDAs, UMKC, MDA and the University of Kentucky partnered on the development of the training curriculum and instructional manuals. An estimated 1,800 Expanded Function Dental Assistants (EFDAs) have been trained since then.

The 1,800 EFDAs have added the equivalent in dental productivity of 180-270 full-time dentists to the Missouri dental work force.
As we look to the future, expanding the productivity of the dental work force in Missouri is critical. Over the next two decades, the number of licensed dentists in the State of Missouri will decrease. Forty (40) percent of the State’s dentists are now age 55 and older. The number of dentists retiring exceeds the number entering the dental work force. We must offset this decrease in the supply of dentists by increasing the supply of other dental workers, such as dental hygienists and EFDAs. Otherwise, Missourians will find it increasingly difficult to access needed dental services. For many communities throughout the state, this is already problematic. Expanded Functions Dental Assistants offer the quickest and most economic means of securing additional dental productivity. According to Brian Barnett, Executive Director of the Missouri Dental Board, EFDAs currently only constitute approximately “25% to 30% of the state 6,000 dental assistants.” As part of a comprehensive solution to the state’s oral health work force needs, EFDAs may be the most significant component (short-term) to the problems of rural areas. Dental School Yearbooks Available
The UMKC School of Dentistry Library has a large assortment of duplicate yearbooks available. There are multiple copies of some years and for other years there are none. Some copies are in better shape than others. And since 1992, no yearbooks have been published. If you would like a copy of a specific yearbook from the thirties, forties, fifties, sixties or seventies, please write or call the UMKC School of Dentistry Library. If a copy of the one you want/need is available, we will send it to you. Please contact: Ann Marie Corry (816)235-2030 or email corrya@ umkc.edu.
