Class Notes

Class of 1947
Enslie I. Schilb, Tampa, Fla., went on a Caribbean Cruise last fall with his wife to celebrate their 52nd wedding anniversary. It was their 32nd cruise.

Tom Burris, Bartlesville, Okla., plays golf’s nearly every sunny day. He and his wife, Barbara, winter in Florida. They have many children and grandchildren.

Thomas (Tom) W White, St. Joseph, Mo., retired in the fall of 2005.

Class of 1950
Billy Carlton, Aurora, Colo., and his wife, Eileen, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Billy turned 87 this winter and has been retired since 1984.

Carl J Fyler, Topeka, Kan., was named the Knight of the Legion of Honor for his valorous actions during World War II by the Counsel General of France in Chicago.

Glenn L Hough, Pittsburg, Kan., retired from his practice last winter after seeing orthodontic patients for 43 years. He’s still living in Pittsburg, Kan.

Class of 1951
Jack Austerman, Oklahoma City, Okla., was recently named clinical professor emeritus of orthodontics at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry.

Class of 1952
L Thane Frazier, Lyons, Kan., is still practicing 3 ½ days a week, and he’s 81-years-old. His wife, Mary Lou, passed away recently. His daughter, Mary Jo, has her own dental practice in South Monica, Calif. Thane’s nephew, Mike, practices ortho in Indiana, and his granddaughter, Nicole, and her husband, Jeff Gust, practice dentistry in Hutchinson, Kan.

Class of 1953
John E Dietrich, Mission Hills, Kan., retired after 53 years of practice. He was the first to specialize in endodontics in Kansas, and treated over 40,000 patients. He plans to travel with his wife, Barbara, and spend time with their three children and five grandchildren. He also plans on doing volunteer work, playing golf, and watching the Royals and Chiefs. John wants to say “hi” to his classmates and gives a special salute to the new UMKC endodontists.

Wayne Peay, Corrales, N.M., has been retired since 1990. He and his wife, Marilyn, recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. They have five children and 13 grandchildren.

Class of 1957
L Edward Engle, Olathe, Kan., retired in 1999 and moved from Texas to the Kansas City area. After 17 years in practice he attended the University of Texas Medical School branch at Galveston as a full-time resident in anesthesiology. He then practiced hospital anesthesia for 20 years.

Class of 1960
George W. Karr, Kansas City, Mo., has pulled or repaired teeth in 20 different countries, including Togo, West Africa, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Haiti, Peru, Fiji, Guadalcanal; and Papua, New Guinea. He has been paid for his services in the United States and England. Karr was awarded the Rotary Club International “Service Above Self” award. He made impressions last fall for a 102-year-old woman so she could eat cake on her birthday. Dr. Karr has a sign on his desk that says “Work is the most fun of all.” He is still practicing dentistry although he has unsuccessfully retired five times.

John Kazmierski, Pittsburg, Kan., retired in 2004. He started his practice in 1960, on his wife’s birthday. “I gave her the gift of going to work in 1960 and retirement in 2004.” He thinks she liked the gift in 1960 better.

Arnold Sarya, Traverse City, Mich., was honored with the 2006 Distinguished Service Award from the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce. He was an orthodontist in Traverse City from 1960 to 2003. His belief in helping others was the foundation of his practice and is reflected in his community service. Dr. Sarya has always had an interest in young people and sports. He was instrumental in the development of an outdoor skating rink in Traverse City and the creation of a local cross-country skiing program. He is grateful for the excellent training in orthodontics he received at the UMKC School of Dentistry, which allowed him to serve his patients well in his orthodontics practice.

Class of 1962
Charles Beadles, Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, retired in 2005 after 41 years as a dentist with the Federal Government. He spent three years in the U.S. Navy and 38 years with the Veterans Administration/Veterans Affairs. Dr. Beadles spent the past 25 years as chief, dental service VAMC, in Knoxville. He was also chief, Dental Service, Central Iowa Health Care System, including medical centers in Des Moines and Knoxville. He also served as an adjunct associate professor, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He also served on the dental hygiene faculty of the Des Moines Area Community College.

Class of 1965
William P Smith, Jr., Bartlesville, Okla., sold his practice and building last year. His son, David, is a medical doctor. His second son, Alan, writes software for large companies. His daughter, Susanne, is a senior at Oklahoma University. And his son, Buck, is a sophomore at Oklahoma University. William and his wife, Anne, are currently living most of the time on the Cayman Islands, where there is no crime.

Baxter Newton, Joplin, Mo., became a first-time grandpa of a baby boy, Sebastian Clark Newton, born last fall.

Class of 1966
Rudolph Dittrich, Saratoga, Calif., is now a life-time member of the California Dental Association.

Vance J Dykhouse, Blue Springs, Mo., is serving as the president of the American Board of Orthodontics. He is in his final year of an eight-year term on the board. He serves as both a director and as an examiner and also represents the Midwestern Society of Orthodontics, a constituency of the American Association of Orthodontics. Dykhouse’s son, David, joined the practice in 1999 and became certified in 2006.

Class of 1969
Jerry R Fankhauser, Springfield, Mo., says that his wife, Leslie, retired after teaching kindergarten 39 years. His son, Ben, recently joined the practice after graduation. Dr. Funkhauser has also completed 300 open-water scuba dives.

Donald (Don) F Swartz, Ridgway, Colo., and his wife, Sally, moved to southwest Colorado, and is semi-retired. He is enjoying a slower-paced life-in-practice.

Class of 1970
Don Crow, Corpus Christi, Texas, recently retired. Dr. Crow and his wife, Doreen, still maintain homes in Corpus Christi and Austin. He plans to spend his time at the ranch and remodeling projects.

Class of 1971
George Latta, Jr., Chattanooga, Tenn., retired from the U.S. Army in 1986, and retired from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 2004. He currently volunteers for the Chattanooga Dental Clinic.

Class of 1974
Mark Ortinau, Ballwin, Mo., was recently inducted into the International College of Dentists.

Class of 1975
Gregory Allen, Leawood, Kan., reports that his daughter, Whitney, recently graduated from University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism and a minor in history.

Deborah Thornberry-Manne, St. Louis, Mo., received the Alfred C Fones Award from the American Dental Hygienists’ Association last summer during their Annual Session held in Orlando, Fla. This is one of the highest honors given to dental hygienists by this organization. Deborah was also the recipient of the Irene Newman Professional Achievement Award in 1997.

Class of 1977
Daniel Jolly, Newark, Ohio, was the president of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry, 2004–06.

Class of 1978
William Evans, Tulsa, Okla., reports that his oldest son, Heath, graduated from Villanova and is currently attending the University of Oklahoma School of Dentistry. Dr. Evan’s youngest son, Beau, graduated from Loras College and is currently attending the University of Oklahoma.

Jon Julian, McPherson, Kan., says that his son, Blake, is currently a dental student at the UMKC School of Dentistry. Blake is the only son to follow in his dad’s footsteps.

Class of 1979
James Elias, Independence, Mo., and his wife, Sharon, were recently blessed with their third grandchild. James and Sharon returned from Zambia, Africa, after their 5th mission trip last fall. He said it was an unbelievable experience and he will be happy to arrange for anyone else to help there or here. Call Dr Elias at 816-478-3600 for further details.

Edwin Long, Harrisonville, Mo., married the love of his life, Nancy, in 1994.

Rick Melichar, Mesa, Ariz., after owning his practice 21 years, sold his One Day Denture business in Blue Springs, Mo., to Affordable Dentures.

Robert M Wilson, Leawood, Kan., accepted a full-time clinical faculty appointment at the UMKC School of Dentistry after 27 years of general practice.

Class of 1980
George Albin, St Louis, Mo., is in his 18th year as a school board director for the Ritenour School District. George and Tom Nuckles (DDS ’80) had dinner in Chicago at the National School Board Association meeting. Tom is a member of the school board in Plainville, Kan. Tom and his wife, Cassie, attended along with George and his wife, Patty.

Gary Ross, Albuquerque, N.M., completed Advanced Training at the Misch Institute and obtained Fellowship status in the ICOI. Dr. Ross maintains a private practice called High Desert Dental: The Implant Center of the Southwest on Implant Complex Reconstructive Dentistry. This year marks his 26th year of private practice in Albuquerque.

Class of 1981
Craig W Herre, Leawood, Kan., recently completed Orognathic Bioesthetics International curriculum in bioesthetic dentistry. Less than 200 dentists worldwide completed this curriculum. Dr. Herre’s son, Tim, is a student at the UMKC School of Dentistry.

Class of 1982
Jeff Rickabaugh, Winston-Salem, N.C., graduated in 1993 from University of Pittsburgh with an MDS. He is married and has two sons, Thomas, 16, and Alex, 13.

Jim Shaner, Farmington, Mo., reports that his son, James, a recent graduate from University of Missouri-Columbia, will be entering the UMKC School of Dentistry.

Class of 1984
Robert E Butler, St Louis, Mo., received the Distinguished Service Award for Greater St Louis Dental Society for 2006. He was also appointed to serve on the ADA Council for Government Affairs.

David Dear, Versailles, Mo., reports that his oldest son, Scott, will graduate from the University of Central Missouri in May 2007 and will be getting married in June 2007. Scott has applied to the UMKC School of Dentistry for the 2007 school year. Dr. Dear’s middle son, Thomas, is working toward a degree in chemistry and wants to be a dermatologist. David’s youngest son, Michael, is 16 and thinks he owns the world.

Tim Doerner, Clearwater, Fla., opened a second office in North Tampa, Fla. His primary office is in Clearwater. Nicholas Bell (DDS ’06) will be joining the practice this year.

Class of 1985
Shanon Kirchhoff, Cape Girardeau, Mo., is the Missouri Dental Association president-elect 2007. He is also the president-elect 2007 for the UMKC Orthodontics Alumni Association.

Michael Tobin, Sparta, N.J., was named a Diplomate in Implant Dentistry after passing a rigorous examination. He joins 316 other dentists as a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry (ABOI/ID), becoming one of the nation’s leading experts in implant care.

Class of 1987
Michael Potter, Overland Park, Kan., is the head of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Class of 1988
Roger D Buzbee, Rogersville, Mo., opened a new clinic in April, 2005.

Michelle Deutch, Overland Park, Kan., reports that his son, Samuel, recently graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in psychology and is currently pursuing a master’s and Ph.D. degree in psychology at the University of Kansas.

Armand K Chong, Honolulu, Hawaii, was honored by the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners as a certified independent medical examiner.

Craig Hollander, St Louis, Mo., was awarded the 2005 Missouri Dental Association’s Dentist of the Year award for his work with the Start Right Program. The program strives to educate parents about the importance of good oral health.

Class of 1989
Mark D McQuary, Tallahassee, Fla., is serving as vice-president of the Northwest Florida Dental Association. He will then move into the position of president of the district in 2008. The district consists of the panhandle of Florida.

Class of 1991
Samuel Miller, Joplin, Mo., has been elected as Southwest District Trustee to the Missouri Dental Association Board. He will serve a 4-year term on the board.

Class of 1993
William Giannobile, Ann Arbor, Mich., was elected to his second 3-year term on the board of directors by the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation. Dr. Giannobile is director of the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, where he is also the Najjar Endowed Professor of Dentistry in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine.

Rodney Vergotine, Oak Park, Ill., was appointed to the pediatric faculty of the College of Dentistry at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

Class of 1999
Kevin A Cattaneo, Prairie Village, Kan., celebrated the birth of a daughter, Calista Diane, last winter. Kevin has a son, Calvin Anthony, who will turn five this year.

Class of 2000
Marlo Miller, Oklahoma City, Okla., practices orthodontics.

Class of 2002
Donald (Chuck) Summerlin, Carbondale, Ill., served a 3-year-tour with the U.S. Air Force at Little Rock, AFB, Ark. He served as the deputy flight commander for the 314th Dental Flight. Chuck separated from the USAF in May 2005 and moved to Carbondale. He opened Aloha Dental in June 2005, a state-of-the-art clinic featuring an all computerized office with digital radiology. He and his family moved to Carbondale because his wife is from a small farm town about 20 miles from there. Chuck and his wife, Diane, have a 3-year-old daughter, Ella, and their second daughter, Avery, was born last fall.
