If you’re
looking for John Haynes (D.D.S. ’60, M.A. ’71), professor
and chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry,
at an event he’s helped organize, you’re not likely
to find him in the foreground orchestrating the
action. You’ll have better luck finding him in
the background, hauling refreshments, setting
up tables and generally doing whatever needs to
be done. For Dr. Haynes, “leader” is just another
way of saying chief gofer or head schlepper. For
him, actions speak louder than words. In fact,
he’s been letting his actions do his talking at
UMKC for four decades — as a student, as a dentist,
as an educator, as an administrator, as a dental
alumnus and as a friend. His many University activities
and honors include: Dental Alumni Association
president, 1988; Dental Alumnus of the Year, 1992;
UMKC Outstanding Community Service Award, 1995;
and Elmer Pierson Teaching Award, 2000. Also,
he and his wife, Judy (DH ’61), have been honored
with a Rinehart Medallion in recognition of their
financial generosity to the Rinehart Foundation.
To honor
Dr. Haynes’ considerable leadership contributions
and to encourage others to emulate his get-the-job-done
leadership style, a fund-raising campaign has
been launched to establish the Dr. John I. Haynes
Student Leadership Scholarship. A handful of grateful
friends and colleagues have already donated to
the effort to raise the $10,000 necessary to endow
the scholarship. The organizers envision the scholarship
being awarded annually to a student who has distinguished
himself or herself as a “leader” and a “doer.”
