Dr. James Dryden
maintained a private practice in endodontics
in Tulsa , Okla. , for the past seven years
before coming to the School of Dentistry as
a clinical professor in endodontics. Dryden
received a master of science degree in endodontics
from UMKC in 1972, as well as a D.D.S. degree
in 1966. Dryden is a member of the American
Association of Endodontists, and the Missouri
Dental Association. He taught in the U.S. Army
Dental Corps in the Republic of Vietnam from
1967-68. He has published articles in Dental
Clinics of North America and in Compendium of
Continuing Education.

Dr. Sharon Glenn,
an assistant clinical professor, comes to the
School of Dentistry after completing a general
practice residency at the University of Washington
in Seattle . Glenn received an R.Ph. bachelor
of science degree from the University of Houston
and a D.D.S. degree from the University of Texas
Health Science Center in Houston in 1994. Glenn
practiced privately at the Glenn Family Dental
Clinic from 1994–99, which was selected as the
Best Dental Clinic in Galveston County , Texas
, in 1993.

Dr. Ram K. Grandhi,
an assistant professor and director of predoctoral
orthodontics, comes to the School of Dentistry
from the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis
, where he was the resident instructor in orthodontics.
Grandhi received a master of science degree
in orthodontics from the University of Minnesota
. He is a member of the American Association
of Orthodontics, as well as the American Academy
of Periodontology. Grandhi has published articles
in the Journal of Oral Pathology and Medicine
and the American Journal of Orthodontics
and Dentofacial Orthopedics.

Dr. Dennis Killiany
is the first professor to be appointed to the
Dr. Leo Rogers Chair in Orthodontics and Dentofacial
Orthopedics at the School of Dentistry . Killiany
earned a D.D.S. degree from Case Western Reserve
University in Cleveland , Ohio , in 1979, and
a master’s degree from the Department of Orthodontics
at Saint Louis University . He was awarded the
Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award at St.
Louis University ’s Center for Advanced Dental
Education in 1999. He is a member of the International
Association for Dental Research and the Missouri
Dental Association, as well as other organizations.
He has co-authored books that include Clinical
Research as the Basis of Clinical Practice and
Normal and Abnormal Bone Growth Basic and Clinical
Research.

Dr. Miguel Rico,
a clinical associate professor, earned a D.D.S.
degree from the University of San Andres at
La Paz , Bolivia , as well as at UMKC. Rico
had served as the chief dental officer for the
Federal Bureau of Prisons, U.S. Penitentiary
in Lompoc , Calif. , since 1994. He was responsible
for planning and implementing dental programs
for over 1,900 inmates. Rico’s published articles
include “Oral Health Status of a Federal Prison
Population” in the Journal of Public Health
Dentistry.

Dr. Christos Angelopoulos,
a teaching assistant in the Dental Radiology Clinic,
received a master of science degree in oral biology
from UMKC and completed the UMKC advanced education
program in Diagnostic Sciences and Oral and Maxillofacial
Radiology. He is a member of the American Academy
of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, the American
Society of Forensic Odontology and the Hellenic
Society of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology. Angelopoulos
received the Biotene Award for Excellence in Hospital
Dentistry and the Truman Medical Center (East)
Auxiliary and Volunteers Services Scholarship.

Dr. Gregory Houston
joined the School of Dentistry faculty in the
Special Patient Care clinic in 1999. In January
2000 he moved to the clinical faculty as the
Team Two coordinator. Houston received a D.D.S.
degree from UMKC in 1979. He is a member of the
Organization of Teachers of Oral Diagnosis and
the International Association of Dental Research.
He received the John M. Trembly Service Award.
Houston helps coordinate an annual dental outreach
mission to Nicaragua .

Dr. Leonard Lausten
is the director of Special Patient Care and Dental
Emergency Services. He received a D.D.S
degree from Marquette University in 1974 and completed
a postgraduate program at St. Mary’s Hospital
in Waterbury , Conn. As a faculty member at Marquette
University , Lausten taught bio-materials and
diagnostic and treatment planning from June 1998
until October 2000, when he joined the UMKC faculty.
While at Marquette , Lausten also treated medically
compromised patients in four satellite clinics
that he established. He has published numerous
articles, and he is a member of the Wisconsin
Association for Dental Research and the
American Association of Dental Schools.

Dr. Cynthia S. Petrie
is an assistant professor in the Department of
Restorative Dentistry. Petrie received a D.D.S.
degree from the University of Athens School of
Dentistry. She earned a certificate in prosthodontics
and a master of science degree from UMKC. During
her first year on the faculty at UMKC, she earned
a U.S. dental degree. Petrie’s research interests
focus on dental bonding and dental implants.

Dr. John W. Thurmond is
an associate professor and the director of the
Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD)
program. He earned a D.D.S. degree from Creighton
University in Omaha , Neb. , in 1970, and a master
of science degree in biomedical sciences from
the University of Texas Health Science Center
at Houston . Thurmond is a member of the Academy
of Operative Dentistry and the Academy of General
Dentistry . He has taught in the fields of diagnosis
and treatment planning, esthetic dentistry and
restorative dentistry.
