Joe Spalitto (D.D.S. '72), Sue
McMillen (D.D.S. '77), and Elizabeth Spalitto (DH '68)
were accompanied by Wendy
Weimer (D.D.S. '01) and David Keim (D.D.S. '01) in January
2001 to perform volunteer dental work in Guatemala.
They traveled with medical students, nurses, and professors
from the University of Health Sciences who belong to
the DOCARE International medical missionaries. They
joined other professionals from all over the United
States in this group of about 200 personnel. Over a
20-day period, they saw about 8,000 patients. The medical
groups worked in four different locations in Guatemala.
The day after the group arrived, an earthquake hit El
Salvador, 175 miles away. They sent emergency physicians
to help out. Fortunately, in Guatemala there was no
damage, but it definitely shook the clinic. In El Salvador,
over 1,000 people were killed and over 100,000 left
homeless. The dental group, along with a group of doctors,
medical students, nurses, and pharmacists, worked in
a shelter for homeless women and children. The mission
lasted four days, and they saw around 200 patients from
the shelter, townspeople from San Andres, Itzapa, and
children from a local orphanage. The UMKC dental students
also worked with two newly graduated dentists from Guatemala
in the clinic. They exchanged information and techniques.
They also attended some CME classes with other medical
personnel.
