For the past three
years the Virginia Brown Orthodontic Program
has provided financial resources for the UMKC
Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial
Orthopedics to deliver care to children without
the financial resources to afford essential
orthodontic treatment. Forty-eight children
have received care in the program. Based on
the program’s ongoing success, the Brown family
has renewed its grant of $120,000 to the UMKC
School of Dentistry for three additional years.
Since the establishment
of the program at UMKC, the Brown family has
expanded its efforts to assist disadvantaged
children by recruiting 27 community orthodontists,
who treat program participants in their private
offices. Participating doctors include:

Dr. Katherine Kula, chair of the
UMKC Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial
Orthopedics, screens patients for both programs,
advises the Brown family on patient selection issues
and serves as a member of the community orthodontic
team in her private faculty practice.
Currently 175 children are receiving
treatment in the combined programs.
