Research-Oriented Academic Programs

The UMKC School of Dentistry offers many opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to participate in officially sponsored research projects or to pursue their own specific areas of scientific investigations.

Advanced Degree Program
The School works with students to design advanced education program that includes specialized coursework in basic, clinical, or behavioral sciences related to dentistry. There are two Master’s level programs that focus on understanding the scientific method and applying it to projects that address special interests and expertise. The sophisticated doctoral program crosses developmental boundaries to facilitate the development of individual studies in oral biology and related areas. The degrees offered include: Master of Science in Dental Hygiene Education, Master of Science in Oral Biology, and Interdisciplinary Ph.D.

Summer Dental Scholars
UMKC School of Dentistry offers an exemplary program for dental students to pursue research interests. Every summer, a select group of students is given the opportunity to work alongside senior scientists and researchers in the pursuit of scientific findings related to dentistry. For eight weeks, the students can observe and assist their mentor’s in the School’s fully equipped laboratories and clinics. Each participant’s responsibilities are associated with his or her special interests. Their hands-on duties range from conducting literature searches to preparing specimens to delivering care under supervision. Students earn an hour of independent study credit for their participation. In addition, each student makes concluding oral and written presentations. Several of these research assistance have presented their findings at national and international conferences such as the annual meeting of the International Association for Dental Research.

Student Research Group
The American Association of Dental Research (AADR) sponsors Student Research Groups, and the UMKC School of Dentistry is proud to host one of the chapter’s groups. Students participating in the program work with faculty mentors to build and improve their research skills. The students actively assist in on-going research projects, and many will earn recognition by presenting papers reflecting their work at regional conferences.
