The Office of Students Programs hosted its fourth annual Welcome Reception for incoming dental students on Friday, Feb. 18, 2011. The reception offered the members of the Dental Class of 2015, their guests, and the UMKC School of Dentistry community an opportunity to come together and celebrate the students’ acceptance into dental school. The event also served as a preliminary orientation to present information to the students about the path ahead and the financial picture of paying for dental school and managing student debt.

The event’s attendees received guidance and encouragement from two practicing dentists. Dr. LaTedra Collins served as the Guest Alumni Speaker. Dr. Collins earned her DDS degree at UMKC in 2007 and serves as a staff dentist at Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center in Kansas City, Mo. Dr. Kaz Hasnani served as the ADA “Success Seminar” Guest Speaker. Dr. Hasnani graduated from Nova Southeastern University in 2002 and maintains a private practice in Jasper, Tenn.

Almost 85% of the incoming students were in attendance at this optional program. The total attendance, including guests, was over 210. The incoming class will return to the School of Dentistry August 22 to begin their first year of dental school. The geographic distribution of the 106 new students includes the following states: MO (69), KS (22), NM (4), HI (3), AR (3), CO (1), FL (1), OK (2), and UT (1). The class includes 47 females and 59 males. Their average science GPA is 3.61 and their DAT academic average is 18.6. They all possess extensive dental experience through observation and assisting as well as extensive community service participation.
