Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy and Chemical Imaging Laboratory - equipped with FTIR system to detect and image the vibration characteristics of chemical functional groups for biological tissues and biomaterials. FTIR has the capability to provide the information such as mineral/matrix ratio, protein secondary structure, collagen crosslinking and orientation, mineral crystallinity and composition in mineralized tissue research. FTIR uses an infrared radiation beam to identify the chemical structure of a molecule by measuring the absorbance of light at different frequencies. When combined with a microscope, chemical changes can be imaged as a function of position. Attenuated total reflectance (ATR) spectroscopy can be used to measure the chemical changes on the surfaces of samples. Curing of materials can be monitored with time-varying FTIR and the chemical changes due to chemical reaction can be quantified. FTIR can characterize protein secondary structure. FTIR lab has specialist expertise in the characterization and process analysis of FTIR data from a wide research fields.

The FTIR Spectroscopy and Chemical Imaging lab includes:

  • PerkinElmer spectrum Spotlight 300 FTIR imaging system.
    • Generates spectra in transmission and reflectance modes
    • Can be used in extended range mid-IR, near-IR range
    • Provides a 25μm pixel resolution mode for ultrafast screening of large sample areas and a 6.25μm pixel resolution mode for high definition work
    • With Polarization analysis
  • ICL KBr Pellet Kit with 13mm die set & 20 ton E-Z Press
